Why Soy? We're so glad you asked!
What is soy wax, why is it superior, and why are we so adamant about it being the only thing we use in our homes? That's a terrific question with a fascinating answer!
Typically, mass-produced commercial candles and wax melts are made from paraffin wax. Doesn't sound too bad, right? Actually, it's REALLY bad. Paraffin wax is nothing more than a by-product of the crude oil industry. The Encyclopedia Britannica website states: "Paraffin wax is obtained from petroleum by dewaxing light lubricating oil stocks."
So let's see: how would you feel about putting some artificial fragrance in front of your car's exhaust pipe and funneling it through the window of your home? That doesn't sound so smart, but it's not a far stretch from what "normal" candles and wax melts do! Using paraffin waxes also contributes to the fossil fuels industry and is NOT a renewable source. Bad on bad!
To top that off, commercially produced candles usually contain zinc or aluminum core wicks. Paraffin wax has such a high melting point that it takes much more heat to melt it and disperse aroma. THIS is where the biggest fire concerns and dangers come from! High heat+burning aluminum+petroleum based wax = Well, I'll let you do the math.
Let's look at the alternative! Our candles and wax melts are made with 100% Soy bean and vegetable waxes, and feature pure cotton wicks. No chemicals, no burning metals. Soy wax is derived from a simple process: Farmers grow soy beans, then after harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. It's that simple! We only buy our soy wax from a local producer in Louisville, KY and have earned the Kentucky Proud certification from the Department of Agriculture for directly supporting Kentucky's farming families! The soy wax that you buy in our candles most likely grew out of the ground less than a year ago. Isn't that awesome?
Oh and those pure cotton wicks are pretty cool too! Simple braided cotton, just like the t-shirt you may be wearing right now, burns much cooler and doesn't have to get dangerously hot to melt the soy wax. That lower burning tempurate is also why you can smell our candles down to the very last flicker. We get so many compliments about how our fragrance stays strong until the very end! These qualities make our candles and melts MUCH safer for kids and pets in your household. (As always, use caution when burning your candles and put the lid on to exstinguish flames!)
Our small (8oz) soy candles also host a hefty burn life of 35-45 hours!!! Our candles are also carbon neutral and intended to be recycled with every component. Our glass jars are BPA-free, made in the USA, and most of our labels are printed on recycled paper! These are the reasons why we feel that soy wax and our products are superior and WELL worth the price!
